School Closure Assignment and Activities

May 18 - 21
Reminder: any student who submits work for the week is eligible for the McDonalds delivery drawing!

1. Sight Reading Excerpt
Share an audio/video recording of you performing the etude from Sight Reading Factory. Practice the etude and make prepare it for performance to the best of your ability, then submit the audio/video of your performance. It is okay if it isn't perfect, the point is to have a project and set a goal with a deadline on it and do your best within that time frame.

2. Listen and Respond
Alfred Reed "The Hounds of Spring"
This is a classic wind band piece! Beautiful fanfare at the beginning with an incredible song section in the middle. Alfred Reed is know for his lush orchestration (organization of parts in the wind ensemble). His pieces are thick, challenging, and result in a full sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzcoUDRR_7s

As you watch and listen - and focus just on the listening, really try to center yourself in the sound and just be present with the music - do a written free response. This could be in the form of a story, or you describing what is happening in the move if this were the soundtrack, or you could write poetry, or just words that describe the feeling/emotions you have that the music gives you. Be creative, relax, enjoy.
You MUST listen to and respond to the entire piece. I would encourage you to put devices/distractions away during this activity!
Send your free response to me via email (you can even just write it in the email)

May 11 - 15

McDonalds Give-Away Update:
Any student who submits work (either video or free response) will be entered into the drawing this week.

1. 10 Minute Practice Videos
  • If you have already done a video, use the feedback I gave you last time to make your practicing more effective/efficient.
  • Make a  video of at least 10 minutes of you practicing something from the technique pack OR an etude or exercise OR piece of music from another book you are working out of and send it to me, I will watch it and email you feedback. The best way to send me a video is to share it with me on onedrive. If you have another way you want to share it that works, that is good also.

2. Listen and Respond
David Maslanka's Symphony No. 4
Watch Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt_ELCsIeXI&t=877s  (side note, I was at this concert at CWU and it was 1,000,000,000,000 more amazing in-person!)

This week's focus: 10 minute practice videos! Any student who submits a video of themselves practicing for 10 minutes will have their name added to a drawing for a free and delivered (by me)  meal from McDonalds, your choice.
  1. Work on the Sight Reading Factory excerpt and send me a video or audio recording of you playing it with a metronome. It must be 60 beats per minute or faster.
    1. Click Here for Sight Reading
    2. You will need to figure out which part works for you. They are labeled by the key of your instrument and by comfortable range.
  2. Make a  video of at least 10 minutes of you practicing something from the technique pack OR an etude or exercise OR piece of music from another book you are working out of and send it to me, I will watch it and email you feedback. The easiest way to do this is for you to post a video on youtube as unlisted but send me the link. If you can figure out another way to get the video to me that works, awesome!

Week 2 (March 30 - April 3)

Week 2 Practice Guide

Music/Literature Practice:
Continue to listen to recordings of the music from week 1. Unfortunately due to building restrictions I was not able to scan the sheet music. I am working on setting up my scanner at home so I can do this for you.

Fight Song Challenge!!!
I have an idea for a fun band project that we can work "together" on, even though we are apart. I'm not 100% sure how the end result will work out, but I want to ask any of you who want to, to record a video of yourself performing the SP Fight Song and send it to me at [email protected] My goal is to compile the video and audio into a collage or something that we can post on youtube to get some virtual school spirit going.
Here are the guidelines:
  • Use your phone or some other highish quality video recorder and get the best quality of video/audio you can.
  • If you want to use file sharing instead of email, like google drive or dropbox or something, you can do that, just share it with [email protected]
  • Record the Fight Song at 160 beats per minute.
  • You MUST use a metronome to practice and record, and the recording has to be as exactly with the metronome and as in time as you can play it. Otherwise, the videos and audio will not line up.
  • Have the metronome going in your ear buds or headphones while you do the recording.
  • Wear school spirit/band gear when you do it! Face paint, anything you can/want - make it fun! Make sure you are visible in the recording!
  • You can do the video in landscape or portrait format, but I would prefer landscape if you can (phone sideways)
  • Percussion - be creative! Use... stuff? Drumsets if you have them! Snares... whatever you want/can. Make it tasty ;)
Let's make it our goal to have all the videos in to me by the end of the weekend. That gives you a few days to practice with a metronome, do a bazillion test runs and a number of recording "takes" before you get a final version and send it my way.

PLEASE HAVE VIDEOS TO ME BY FRIDAY, APRIL 3
You can drop the videos in this google drive folder: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kz_-I567cNUNIV3gp_RDGLkXLy5BdHwM?usp=sharing

Or you can email them to me.

Week 1 Practice Guide (Click on the link to the google form)

Music/Literature Practice:

Focus this week on listening to the overall structure of the pieces: "Lexington March", "One Giant Leap", and "Paper Cuts". Don't try to play your part all the way through. Try to get a good idea of what the music should sound like and what role your part plays in the ensemble through listening. Mark your parts with things you hear. Begin practicing challenging sections slowly and methodically. Problem solve rhythms you don't know, and email me with questions or comments about the music!

Optional
Send me a video of your practicing or performing and I can give you some written feedback. Shoot me an email at [email protected] with a video file or link. Send me the note reading challenge code so I can see how you are doing at note reading, or just let me know if you have any questions about the music!
