Chamber Orchestra Audition Information
Auditions for Chamber Orchestra for the 2020-2021 school year will be by video.
You will create a video of yourself performing the audition materials and share that video with me by the DEADLINE of Monday, June 8th at 11:59pm.
There are two ways to share a video with me that are dependable and that I recommend:
1. Post to Youtube (as per the SYS instructions by Dr. Baldwin here) and share the video with me (email me the link)
2. Share the video with me on Microsoft onedrive: [email protected]
Audition Materials
The materials for auditions are similar to last years and are identical to the SYS Philharmonic Audition Materials (with an exception, see below)

Here are shortcuts to the music, however I recommend going through the SYS website and using their resources. Please take advantage of what SYS has provided for you! Watch the videos and listen to the tutorials.

Audition Video Instructions
The audition video that you share with me no later than Monday, June 8th should contain the following, in this order. You can make a continuous video, or if you do different takes and connect the videos later, that is fine, but it needs to be one single video file, not individual files for each excerpt. For many of you, this will mean doing the audition in one recording. This is different than the audition requirements for SYS Philharmonic, you do not need to include a 2-5 minute solo. That is optional...
1. You performing each excerpt from the audition materials in order listed with a metronome. If the excerpt says "Rubato" do not play with a metronome, because you will be "playing with the time" a little, though it should be close to the tempo marking given.
2. You performing a sight reading excerpt that I will post on this page at 9:00am on Thursday, June 4.
3. Optional: Include 2-3 minutes of you performing part of a prepared solo. This will need to be something you have worked on or been working on. It can even be something from this last year's solo and ensemble.
Other Stuff
Using the SYS audition materials is intentional. I hope that by going through this process more students will audition to be a part of the SYS program. I am not affiliated with that program in any way, but I have seen for many years the benefits of students participating in it or programs like it, and I want to encourage students to "go for it" in any way I can. You can do it!
Don't hesitate to email me with questions. If you want to send me a test video to make sure your sharing process works before the deadline, that might be smart.
If it is absolutely impossible for you to record and submit a video for the audition, you need to let me know immediately so we can set up a time to do a zoom audition. Zoom is not ideal. The quality of sound is terrible. It will work, though, in the absence of a video option. This is only if you have no other choice, and it is not a matter of convenience.
